Weihang Zhu's current research interest focuses on Computer haptics, haptic applications in CAD/CAM, haptic application in medical simulation, multi-axis NC surface machining, polyhedral machining, high speed machining, computational geometry, discrete-evenet computer simulation, and logistics. Weihang passed his Ph.D final defense Exam in August 2003, three years after he arrived in USA. His academic advisor is Dr Yuan-Shin Lee. His other committee memebers include Dr Ezat Sanii, Dr Robert Young and Dr Christopher Healey. After graduation, Weihang worked at SensAble Technologies, Inc. and Yantric Inc. At Yantric, Weihang worked closely with Dr Mandayam Srinivasan and Dr Anuradha Annaswamy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Weihang's mentor in haptics is Dr Yoshitaka Adachi, a world renowned scientist. Currently Weihang is working at Department of Industrial Enginering, Lamar University.

Ph.D Dissertation Topic: Virtual Sculpting and Polyhedral Machining Planning System with Haptic Interface

Weihang's Ph.D dissertation is on developing methodology for haptic applications in CAD/CAM. He has developed haptic and computer-aided virtual sculpting and machining planning system with a 6-DOF input and 5-DOF output haptic interface, based on his methodology. In such a system, a user can virtual sculpt a stock volume material and make intuitive and creative design. The designed part can be processed by the machining planning systems or rapid prototyping systems.

Weihang Zhu's past research in Zhejiang University was in Thermal Energy Engineering. His main interest was in Power Plant Automation and Optimization. In pursuing his master degree, he accumulated extensive experience in the construction of Intranets for power plants.

Weihang's Master thesis was on developing Intranet system for power plants. In such a system, thermal economy analysis and optimization, production information system and office automation system are intergrated together. His Master thesis was based on his years of experience in devloping Intranet systems for several power plants in Zhejiang and Guangdong Provinces, China.
